Kafayat Fakoya is an interdisciplinary researcher, academic and consultant. She received her PhD in Fisheries from the Lagos State University in Nigeria where she taught for several years. Her areas of interests include small-scale fisheries, aquaculture, evaluation, seafood certification, fisheries policy, fish in food and nutrition security; gender and inclusive innovations; local knowledge; seafood traceability and value-chains, nature-based solutions, and transdisciplinary research. She is well published and is currently the Secretary, Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries Section (GAFS); a member, Board of Trustees of Community Catch, and GAFS team member in AQUADAPT project in South East Asia among others. She led/co-led projects including Gender Equity in Freshwater Fisheries for The Nature Conservancy, Gendered Design in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics; national gender advisor and case study author in the Illuminating Hidden Harvest Global Study, a co-primary investigator in the Vulnerability to Viability (V2V).  She has consulted for the Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Development and Research Centre, Canada, The Nature Conservancy, WorldFish, Independent Advice and Evaluation Services in CGIAR (Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research), International Collective in Support of Fishworkers, and Swedbio.
