Sutapa Majumdar is a sociologist by training. She is currently working with LEAD at Krea as a Senior Research Fellow and is based in Delhi. She is also a British Academy Fellow (on no cost extension) with the School of Global Affairs, King’s College London and have recently completed her post-doctoral research work with the Laws of Social Reproduction Project, King’s College London and IWWAGE, New Delhi. Sutapa holds a PhD in Economics (interdisciplinary) from the Department of Economics, University of Pune. Her doctoral research explored the survival strategies of women working in the unorganized labour markets in India with specific focus on sex workers, beauty workers and traditional embroidery workers located in various parts of the country. Having had a Masters and M. Phil degree in Sociology with specialization in gender, she has over a decade of experience working in the development sector on issues of Gender, Health, Sexuality, HIV/AIDS, urban consumption and the Indian labour market. In particular, she has been working very closely with sex workers- male, female and transgender and other sexually marginalized communities across country and have been traveling extensively in the Southeast Asian region for research and advocacy on sex work and Human Rights.
She has attended various national and international conferences and presented her research findings to a varied audience and published her papers. She has single handedly designed and coordinated large- and small-scale qualitative studies and has trained researchers. She has written modules for University Grant Commission of India (UGC), e-Pathshala, an online portal detailing out complete syllabus for undergraduate and post graduate studies and have taught undergraduate and post graduate students in universities in Pune. Sutapa is enthusiastic about her work, eager to learn and believes in teamwork. She is a traveler and loves exploring different cuisines. When not working, she spends her time with friends and family, shopping and cooking and laughing her heart out.
